Book 3 for this year finished...

3. Little Brother By Corey Doctorow Completed 17/01/2009

Little Brother

Its a great book about a surveillance society gone wrong. It's written for "Young Adults" whatever that means... but I've really enjoyed it. It's well written and well researched if occasionally predictable. Although I have to admit that some of my more out there predictions didn't come true...

I'm actually ahead of myself...

I'm going to cheat a little for my next book and read a book I'm halfway through. I think I might do this for my next few books, as I've got a few books I want to just get over and done with.

It's like I need closure...

Anyway the next book I'm reading is "The Diamond Age" by Neal Stephenson. According to my book mark I'm at page 249 of 499 but that bookmark is an SPT underground ticket from February 14th 2006... Odd that's valentines day...

I think I'm going to jump back to the beginning of the chapter I'm on and start from there.

The Diamond Age: Or, a Young Lady's Illustrated Primer

Excuse me for being a corporate whore but I'm linking to Amazon because I will earn commission from those links if you decide you want to buy the book and you buy it from that link...

On the subject of books I saw the funniest caption I've seen in a while. It was one of those Motivational images, it had an ancient looking copy of the bible on it and underneath it just said "Spoiler, Jesus Dies" I almost pissed myself...

Anyway thats it for me now. I'm going to start my next book.

I finished my 2nd book while at cheesy pop on Friday... which was a bit antisocial of me I know, But I just popped up the the study rooms to read the last 20 pages.

So:
2. Memoirs of a Tokyo Day Laborer  Oyama Shiro; Edward Fowler (Translator)

My next book is "Little Brother" by Cory Docrorrow of Boing Boing I've read the first chapter and it's looking like a fun read.

That is to say it's my next book if you don't count the fact that I am planning on reading through Annabels Nano wrimo Novel start to finish this afternoon. I'm not sure if my Book challenge counts books that are not published as books...

In other news I've had a thought about writing a Book about what it was like to grow in Saudi during the 80's and 90's I'm bouncing around a few ideas in my head, but I have to try and get it together in such a way that doesn't mean I get death threats...

I think I'm going to email out a bunch of friends i went to school with and ask them for anecdotes and thoughts as my memory is not what it used to be (Or rather my memory never was) .

One of the reasons I'm cosiddering taking up this endevour is that I stumbled on this Quote and it made me think of home:

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience."
- C. S. Lewis

The other reason was reading A Man With No Talents... It was the way that it exposed the life of somone that no one really knows very much about. I constantly get asked what it was like livign in Saudi because it's supposedly such a strange country, and I'd to love to be able to reply, with:

"Well if you want to know buy my book."

Anyway I need to head out and face the weather because I'm meeting Annabel for lunch at Braehead. There does seem to be an aweful lot of weather out there, much more than usual...

January 8th, 2009

I don't usually believe in New Years resolutions but this year I've decided to enact one anyway, this year I've decided to read more...

I used to read loads but in the past 10 or so years I've fallen off the path, I barely read 4-5 books a year if I'm lucky, I'd love to do one of those challenges where you read 52 books over the course of a year, but I know myself and I know that's not realistic So my goal for the end of the year is to have finished 25 books, that's one for every 2 weeks with 2 weeks slack time in case I get really busy.

I say finished because I'm going to kind of cheat, I'm notorious for picking up a book reading the first couple of chapters and then forgetting about it, so I'm going to work through those books first.

The Good news is I'm already ahead I started and finished reading a book this week.

So to start the list off:

1. Audition By Ryu Murakami translated by Ralph McCarthy. (Completed 07/01/2009)
I'd heard of the Film by Takeshi Miike and one of my friends described it as the most disturbing film he'd ever seen. The book is apparently by comparison rather tame, though I enjoyed it. And now I want to see the film.

Onto my next book which I think is going to be A Man With No Talents By Ooyama Shiro translated by Edward Fowler. Looking at the list of books I want to read I sense a theme of Japanese books translated to English... Can't be helped...

Facebook down :)

I tried to log onto face book just there to procrastinate and was told that my account was unavailable due to site maintainence.

The odd thing is it said "My Account" was unavailable not that facebook is down just that my little part of facebook was not available.

I'm fairly sure i signed up for one of those a day without facebook groups and I'm fairly sure the the date of the blackout was today...

The conspiracy theorist in me wonders if the guys behind facebook have taken the list of the members of those black out groups and switched off thier accounts on the blackout days...

The realist in me knows that suck blackouts won't actually hurt facebook very much, as they have so many users who only log in once in a while that they wouldn't notice a slight dip on any given day.

If there was a month without facebook then that would maybe hurt them, but you'd have to get the whole facebook population on board, which would be difficult as so many people seem to rely on facebook for social interaction. Which is sad...

Oh well, I guess rather than procrastinating I should really just do some work...

I'm a bit confused about he comments that I'm getting, Somone seems to be posting comments in reply to other comments on my blog, these comments look like somone has googles a random phrase my post or in one of the comments and pasted in a phrase that occured near by it in a web page somewhere....

I suspect a bot but I have no idea why thry would want to do this. Maybe they post porn on thier profile and they want to pique my curiosity so I look at their profile?

November 9th, 2008

I found ths on somone elses journal... At 62 in total I'm not as obsessive as I thought apparently, thought I'd say that there was some stuff missing...

Go through the list and check off the titles you have watched. For our purposes, "watching" a title means that for TV and OVA series, you have to have seen at least one episode. For one-shots, you have to have seen the whole thing. At the end of each genre/category, add up your sub-total. At the very end, add up the sub-totals to come up with your grand total. If your grand total is 80 or over, congratulations -- you are an obsessive anime watcher!

As an extra note: not all the titles listed here are great, and some are even steaming piles of crap. Titles on the list are here because they are either 1) genuinely good, 2) insanely popular, 3) good examples of the genre, or 4) just plain notorious. Good anime obsessives should be able to watch series with any of those qualities.

Socil networkign woes...

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

I wish there was some framework that would allow me to normalise my social networks.

I noticed one of my friends mentioned another friend on Live journal, but because everyone on LJ has Wierd Names Like THE_IMMORTAL_SQUIRRIL and YELLOW_COFFEE or whatever I find there is no way to even look through my existing friends profile pages and find people I know who are not yet on my friends page.

I'm to be honest more interested in the way that social networks work than in actually using them, but if there was a way to consolidate all of my social networking and ensure that if I had a friend on MySpace that I was also connected to them on Facebook, Bebo, Twitter, LiveJournal and linked in that would be ace.

In fact something that monitored my activity on all these social networks and said You've just added joe bob as a friend on Facebook, We've found that they also have a twitter and a Live journal account, would you like to add them there too. would be amazing, all this disparity is frustrating, I hate having to keep track of multiple social networks, I want to be able to add a friend somewhere and just be thier friend, convergence is key.

It would be nice if there was some kind of social framwork, which would allow for single connectivity, adding in peoples personal blogs as well would be nice... Open ID I'm looking at you, well I'm glancing at you becuase this isn't what you are meant to do, but something should do this...

end rant.

I've been cooking for years and for the first time in my life I've cut my finger while chopping onions!

Curses, never done that before. curses!

Oh well. Food was good. hopefully there aren't too many bits of onion and garlic under my plaster, they might get grafted in and I'll turn into an onion!

Meep.

Oh well QI is on. And for once I'm watching it as it's broadcast and not off the sky hard disk, I assume it's a re-run but can't complain.

You know there is someting wrong when the first thing you do when you go to write a post is scroll down to the mood box and select sick...

Jeebus I went to China Buffet king today, I didn't eat that much but I think that much stodge was maybe not the best thing to have when I havent eaten all day. I feel properly ill, not just full, not bloated, but that odd if I move too much I'm going to puke kinda ill. and for some reason I'm also a bit dizzy too, probably becasue of the lighting i here, or because I've eaten too miuch and now my belly it taking all the blood away from my brain.

This morning I walked 8 and a half kilometers (Thats about 5.3 miles for the imperial among you) from my house in Yoker the the Kelvingrove museum and art gallery, the mueseum has never been as interesting as it was today with Padre going through the nuances of the weaponry and the clothing and ships and prettty much everything in the museum in his own entertaining way, you can see why he gets paid money to go to schools dressed as a pirate to teach kids about history, he lives it, and if he can amuse me he can probably amuse kids.

following that I started to walk into town but decided I'd Join pix on the train in town instead mainly because of the weather, but also becaseu having walked 5 or so miles on an empty stomache I didn't really want to walk any more. I meandered towards the cinema, passing thorntons on the way, got my self one of those lovely lovely Viennese Truffle bars, to have in case the sun set and the I was still in the the cinema. I put it in my pocket and went to to Rocknrolla guy ritchies latest london gangster flick, which I thoroughly enjoyed except... for the viennese truffle bar, which while in my pocket melted and exploded.

Half war through the film I put my hand in my pocket ( my other hand was not playing a piano, smoking a ciggerette or flicking the finger) to get my phone out to check the time, and when it came out I smelt a really intense aroma of chocolate... I was confused and thought for a minute that somone next to me had opened a chocolate bar or something. then I felt that my phone was a bit sticky... Oh no... I shifted everything in that pocket into other pocket and took out the mostly empty chocolate wrapper... and felt the gooey goodness at the bottom of my pocket.

The shit thing is becasue the sun hadn't set yet I couldn't even savour the remainder of the chocolate or even lick it off my fingers... what a waste.

I decided to just sit there an wait out the film, but the melty gooey goodness in my trousers was really distracting as was the overwhelming smell of it. Oh the torture...

Anyway china buffet king was rubbish to food was too salty and well rubbish, I usually acknowledge that it's not that good but manage to pie out on the all you can eat cornicopia of cantonese delights. Today after a few bites I just wanted to leave, but I was going ot have to pay for the full buffet regardless of how much I ate so I went back for 2nd's and desert. both were unappetising, which is unusual as I normally enjoy the icecream. Even the green tea made me feel ill. Jeebus...

Anyway enough moaning. All in all aside from the food today was good.

I miss Annabel who is away visiting the dragon, but I'm about to see her on msn so Yay!

Going to post this now as I have not much else to say...

It's Ramadan again and I can't eat till sunset so I can't solve the 2nd issue. I'm attempting to rectify the first issue by watching the opening ceremony of the paralympic games.

Its not working...

Only 4 and half hours till sunset... I'll be used to this in a few days time but for the first few days it's always hellish.

Your Score: House Targaryen

72% Dominant, 54% Extroverted, 72% Trustworthy

Ancient. Noble. Passionate to the point of insanity. Transcending lesser beings, you are of House Targaryen.

You are a dominant personality—in fact, you are the most dominant of all eight house types. You will not suffer yourself to be ignored. You will not suffer yourself to be ruled. The phrase "I will not suffer myself to _____!" was practically made for you. You are willful, arrogant, and exceedingly dangerous to screw with. With a temper like yours, anyone stupid enough to saunter into your line of fire won’t soon forget their mistake.

You are also extroverted, which means that everyone in the world knows exactly what your intentions are. Unlike your cohorts (who hide behind smiles and courtesies and court politics), you think of it as your birthright to come riding in on an enormous dragon, breathing fire and fucking your siblings. Hey, what you lack in subtlty, you make up in style!

Finally, you are trustworthy. Your absurd amounts of power and borderline psychosis are not used unjustly. Unlike many, your general aims are just and true. You we bred for rule, and the fact that you cannot rest until you are doing so is not your fault. If you make up your mind, it becomes reality. Never one for empty threats or vainglorious lies, you can only speak the truth. And the truth is "fire and blood."

Representative characters include: Daenerys Stormborn, Rhaegar Targaryen, and Viserys Targaryen

Similar Houses: Baratheon, Lannister,and Tully

Opposite House: Frey

When playing the game of thrones, you play it to the death.

believe in true love, but you're also
constantly aware of practicality and societal
